Digital Quilt

The Digital Quilt

To commemorate the artist, scholar and curator Joanna Greenhill and the performative writer and scholar Kate Love, their friends, former colleagues and students from all over the world came together to propose a collaborative art piece. This piece will consist of individual artworks, woven together to create something new.

In the absence of a physical opportunity to commemorate, we decided on a collaborative artwork, a patchwork of drawings, paintings, sketches, photographs by their students, colleagues and friends. This art piece, a 'Digital Quilt' will help to show the many different artists Kate and Joanna inspired at the MA Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins and beyond. The University of the Arts, Central Saint Martins, its alumni and her friends have expressed their support for this 'Digital Quilt' project - a collage illustrating the diversity of creative voices inspired by Joanna and Kate.

Remarkable Joanna Greenhill changed the way I thought about art. She had a wonderful career in fine art. She drew you in with her warmth and passion and was always a support to all her students. She was a teacher and a friend and I will miss her dearly.

I often think of great tutors as artist-guides helping others best navigate the early stages of their exploration, equipping and enabling them for the ongoing journey - Joanna and Kate were certainly this. Via an always perceptive and generous approach, they engendered an atmosphere of thoughtful but rigorous pursuit. Thank you.

In very different but equally supportive ways, both Joanna and Kate were enormous enablers. For all of us, students and staff alike, it was the first year of the Fine Art MA at CSM. It was an extraordinary time of critical thinking, openness and challenge. I shall always be enormously grateful to you both

Joanna and Kate were both such impressive, inspiring women who were an integral part of MA Fine Art when I was at CSM. At the time, Joanna was our Course Director and Kate was my RP tutor. I cannot remember a moment when they weren't generous with their time. They are unforgettable personalities and their spirit will live on in their families, friends, colleagues and students. May they both rest in eternal peace.

Dr Kate Love is sorely missed by the communities of student artists she taught and advised. Her sincerity, patience and wisdom were greatly valued by all of us in the MA Fine Art cohort which graduated in 2019. Kate's 'What is Practice?' and 'Scenes of Writing' seminar series were vital aspects of the course overall, providing important critical framework and an opportunity to share personal experiences at the heart of our work through writing. By running these sessions, she helped us build a broader context and stronger foundation for our respective art practices. I found these to be an enlightening component of the MA and they continue to be something I reflect on fondly to this day. So, I would like to say a big thank-you to Kate. Rest in peace. Johanna was an inspiration to us. She had a sharp eye that could penetrate through our making and discern a strong idea. She was also very kind and approachable. I am grateful for the opportunity that I had to learn from her.

In 1989 Kate pushed me to apply to CSM. Joanna dragged me to a place where art and medicine, my two practices, were intimately connected so that I could go on to draw my way through a PhD and beyond. She noticed that I lived in the gaps to help me address difficult issues.

Dear Joanna,

We will never make that coffee date we were planning in London,
I so wish we could have met up one last time.

When I think of you I will remember your elegant voice and mane of silvery white hair.
You told me it was short now because of the chemo and I told you if anyone could rock a
short style it was you!

I once asked in the middle of a tutorial what was your favourite book and without
hesitation you told me Moby Dick, I don’t know why but I never forgot that.

Over the years you have not only been a mentor to me but after graduation we
nurtured a friendship. We talked about art, Italy, fashion and film on those coffee dates
in Soho.

Miss you always, Michael x
Michael Gurhy. Among Spirits & Dreams.
I met Joanna in the 1980's through my friend the sculptor Paul Neagu - young, passionate about art (and Paul) of high intelligence and great company. We met again in relation to retrospectives of Paul's art in Leeds Sculpture Gallery and became closer, visiting her in Stroud...all of us older and seeing each other no doubt through the perspective of time - for me then Joanna was closer to her Scottish origins, but still with the same discernment measured quality with passion and humor. It was great to see her own work on show in her house - especially her sensitive thoughtful drawings, and i am so sad to hear that not all of these may have survived. Most recently she came up to us in Manchester several times receiving therapy for her cancer at the Christie Hospital - and it was also a great pleasure then to connect to her sister Jenny and her friends, Ali and Helen; deepening our sense of her life. Fragile then, but still with poise and intellectual passion that i'll remember her for.
