FLUX – in Motion was curated around the idea of Motion. Media Art not only transforms, changes concepts into artefacts, data into vision, it tends to move our understanding of underlying constructs, concepts and their connotations. This duality of motion from idea to piece d’art, from conception to counter-response can be seen as a unifying dynamic, connecting media artists of various genres.
Andy Lomas work come from a study of organic natural forms and their relationship to simple mathematical rules. Influenced by the work of D'Arcy Thompson, Alan Turing and Ernst Haeckel, they study how intricate forms of plant and coral like structures can be created by digital simulation of flow and deposition. Mathematic code generates life forms, where one single parameter can change the course of evolution entirely.
Jack Ratcliffe (doyouknowjack.co.uk) is a London-based artist who specialises in mixed-reality installations that playfully explore humanity’s relationship with technology Notable past exhibitions and performances include the Barbican (Europe’s largest multi-arts and conference venue), the British Library and the Rich Mix. In Teletortoise, anonymous internet users were able to remotely feed, water, and illuminate turtles, and Teasmate, where participants were challenged to make cups of tea by controlling an unfriendly robotic arm. Jack Ratcliffe’s work investigates the human relationship with technology and media - in itself in motion.
Analema Group’s piece KIMA transforms sound into vision – in the case of this iteration through the use neural networks and sound feature extractors created by Sean Soraghan. Dario Villanueva, visual developer, Oliver Gingrich, producer and Paulo Ricca, projectionist discuss processes and concepts behind KIMA: The Wheel shown at the Roundhouse London. KIMA invites audiences to experience their own voice visually, but also collectively as a participatory art piece. Analema Group was founded by Evgenia Emets in 2010 and presents transformative experiences to their audiences. www.analemagroup.com
