Damascene, 2017
Sara’s hybrid approach to art-making is rooted in geometry, inspired by Islamic visual culture. Combining research interests in digital technology and Islamic art, her artistic practice is a means to communicate theoretical and conceptual themes surrounding space, place, border and order.
The Damascene series considers states of motion and stagnation, encouraging and mimicking movement both physical and cognitive.
The geometric patterns in this series reference decorative art from historical sites now in ruins across war-torn Damascus. By bringing this subject to the fore, questions can be raised regarding our interactions and responses to changing spaces.
