Simulacrum, 2012-2022
3D printed sculpture in resin and hand painted with acrylic & QR to a VR sculpture.
300mm x 300mm x 250mm
“Simulacrum” explores the multi-dimensional identity of a performative artwork through changes of mediums; from live performance to a virtual experience to a physical sculpture. Created in collaboration with Eva Sbariani, it recreates a performative scene that was captured by photogrammetry to be translated into the virtual world, making it possible to create this 3D printed sculpture afterwards.
The sculpture represents an iconic moment on Kimatica’s first ritualistic media performances, premiered at Stockholm Fringe Festival in 2012 and Kinetica Art Fair 2013; which was showcased internationally and awarded Best Performance Piece at Winter Pride Arts Awards. Simulacrum uses new media to explore ancient shamanic ritual, combining interactive body-mapping with traditional trance dance techniques to evoke the hypnotic, uneasy space of psychedelic consciousness.
The performer is in a relaxed meditation position, intending to inspire the audience to connect with their inner world. Featuring Simulacrum’s iconic multiface headpiece made by traditional bodycasting techniques in order to capture the detail of human emotions.
